Say Goodbye to A+++

Energy labels are now back to an A – G scale

If you were recently browsing for new appliances and electronics, then you must have stumbled upon the new Energy Labels. That’s right, new energy labels!  So if you saw a fridge freezer with an ‘E’ energy label, it would have been A++ before this transition. This change occurred all across Europe and not just in Malta.

Say Goodbye to A+, A++ and A+++ and say hello to a straightforward scale from A to G. But don’t worry, the new label will only make it easier to identify the most environmentally friendly products 💡 .

Which appliances and electronics will be affected?

As of March 2021, new energy labels were introduced for the below appliances and consumer electronics:

  • Fridges and freezers
  • Wine Coolers
  • Washing machines
  • Washer dryers
  • Dishwashers
  • Televisions and Monitors

As for air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, tumble dryers, and water heaters – the new energy labels will commence in 2023.

New Aspects

  • All labels will be consistent with a scale from A to G

  • QR codes are now `included on each label. This will provide you with useful information about the product.
  • Icons from the older labels will be re-adapted. Nonetheless, new icons will also be incorporated (such as the spinning efficiency of washing machines).
  • Energy consumption values are larger and more centralized.

Why was the energy label renewed?

  • It is easier for consumers to differentiate and compare the performance of each product.

The energy efficiency of consumer electronics and appliances is continually being improved. As a result, there is an increase in products with energy labelling of A+ or higher, making it more challenging for consumers to distinguish between the performance of different products.

  • It assists buyers to choose an appliance that fits their needs and criteria by providing a simple comparison between alternative products.

Energy labels created harmonization in product classification across Europe. Just by looking at labels, shoppers will have an illustrated summary of key features and specifications, thus facilitating comparison.

  • Encourages shoppers to invest in energy-efficient appliances and consumer electronics.

Energy-efficient appliances and electronics will provide consumers with lower electricity & water consumption which will make a noticeable difference in their utility bills.

To summarize, energy labels aim to:

  • Encourage homes to take energy-saving measures.
  • Provides a clear overview of each appliance’s energy efficiency so you can easily compare alternatives.
  • Be a trustworthy resource for consumers looking for electronics and household appliances with the lowest operating costs.
  • Ensures transparency
